July 2025:

Just published: “AAV8 based gene replacement therapy for hereditary spastic paraplegia type 5” in Molecular Therapy – Methods & Clinical Development!
This research brings us one step closer to developing an AAV-based gene therapy for hereditary spastic paraplegia type 5 (SPG5), a debilitating neurological disorder. Our work shows that liver-targeted gene therapy can effectively normalize peripheral oxysterol levels. While we observed promising results in the periphery, the study also highlights the critical need for future strategies to address the central nervous system to fully tackle SPG5. Follow-up studies are already underway.
May 2025:

During the Pint of Science Festival, our master’s student Leelja will present her work on ‘Hermes, the Genetic Messenger: How Viruses Deliver Genes to Cure Diseases’.
Join us at Neckawa, Tübingen on 20th May at 5:30 pm.
Pint of Science Germany organises an international science outreach festival that brings together researchers and the general public in a relaxed atmosphere.

Welcome to our newest group member, Till Stoltenow. Till is studying “Molecular Medicine” at the University of Tübingen and joins the lab for a lab rotation and to complete his bachelor’s thesis.
April 2025:

Almost the entire team (Stefan, Clemens, Jacob, Luisa, Linus, Anabel, Carla, Leelja) will be attending the “iPS Zurich Symposium 2025”. Stefan will talk about our project, “Developing antisense oligonucleotide therapies for SCA3 using iPSC-derived neural models”, while Clemens, Jacob and Linus will present posters about their work.

March 2025:

Stefan and Linus join the “Stem Cells Models of Neurodegeneration (SCMND)” symposium in Edinburgh. Stefan is co-organising this event and Linus is presenting a poster on “Efficient AAV-mediated gene delivery in iPSC-derived neurons”.

Clemens attends the Cure-ND workshop in Paris and presents his work on “Uncovering HSP-SPG4 pathology through axonal proteomics in iPSC-derived cortical neurons”.

We are delighted to welcome Luisa Baraban. Luisa received a prestigious scholarship from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) to pursue her PhD in our lab.

Stefan, Clemens and Anabel attended the Tom Wahlig Symposium and the Treat HSP Meeting in Heidelberg.
Stefan presented an update on “Investigating axon-specific
phenotypes in spastin-deficient iPSC-derived neurons”.
Congratulations to Clemens for winning the “Poster Prize” for his poster on “Uncovering HSP-SPG4 pathology through axonal proteomics in iPSC-derived cortical neurons”.

Grant Approval by the German Research Foundation (DFG)
We are excited to announce that we have recently received positive feedback from the DFG on our grant proposal to develop a gene therapy for the ultra-rare motor neuron disease spastic paraplegia type 5 (SPG5). In a highly collaborative effort combining expertise from the groups of Prof. Michael Ott (MHH Hannover) and Prof. Ludger Schöls (University Clinics & Hertie Institute Tübingen), we aim to combine animal and human stem cell-based models to test innovative AAV constructs for the treatment of SPG5.
June 2024:

Welcome to our newest group member, Leelja Rößler.
Leelja joins the lab to complete her master’s thesis.
March 2024:

Team event of the group Schöls and Hauser. Played a round of “3D minigolf”.

Welcome to our newest group member, Laura García Manzano. Laura joins the lab to complete her master’s thesis.
